How Do You Get Rid Of Mice In Your Home?

Filed under: My Thoughts — SusanCarroll @ 11:05 am

Since moving to a rural community I’ve been plagued with mice and other not so welcome pests in my home. And while I’ve managed to keep the other pest problems under control, I think I have one or more mice in my house most of the time.

Before moving here my cats took care of any mouse that came near or into my house quickly. They knew the popular points of entry into the house and the portals in the house where the mice would come out into the open. And once my cats had the scent of a mouse they would camp out for days in front of that opening until the mouse was taken care of.

Unfortunately, now my cats either can’t or won’t try to keep up with the continual invasion of mice. They still manage to kill a few every year however they don’t seem to get as worked up about having a mouse in the house as they used to.

So during the past few years I’ve been experimenting with other forms of mouse control to get rid of the mice and with keeping them out. So far I’ve tried sticky mouse traps but couldn’t deal with killing a live mouse caught on a glue pad. I’ve used mouse poison very carefully so my pets wouldn’t get into it however it is dangerous and now I’ve discovered that pets could eat a dead mouse and get poisoned. (By the way, those poison pouches and plastic traps that keep the dead mouse out of sight have not worked for me.) I’ve used the old fashioned spring type mouse traps and while they are effective and can be reused, I usually don’t know about the kill until it smells and I refuse to open that trap to release its last victim so I can reset it. I’ve tried to seal up the mouse holes in my walls with steal wool and thought I had sealed up the cracks in my foundation.

But still, the mice keep coming in!

At first I thought they must be coming in when we were letting our pets in and out. Then I found out that a mouse can get in through a 1 quarter inch opening. Do you know how small that is? In this big, old house that has 3 foot of foundation above ground, I’m now planning to cover the entire foundation with something just to be sure I’ve filled anything that small. I am also considering putting screen wire under the concrete patch so when it starts to crumble, the house will still hopefully be mouse proof. (The foundation had been covered with patch sometime before we bought it and the coating has started to crumble in a few places.)

In the meantime I’ve still got to get rid of the mice in my house and am considering the chocolate plaster and instant potato ideas. The only reason I am hesitant about using them is that, while they are supposedly safe for my pets, I won’t know about the dead mouse until it smells and what if it dies inside one of my walls? So while I might try one of these methods I know I will be getting more wooden spring traps and placing them along the walls behind and between some of my appliances and furniture.

If you have a way of getting rid of the mice in your house that works please leave a comment. Hearing a mouse scratching behind my stove is not music to my ears.

Unemployed? Getting A Job Is Harder Than You Think!

Since I started my online business back in 2002 I haven’t been visiting the online job sites or reading the employment classified ads. Thanks to the news, I do know unemployment is way up because there aren’t enough jobs for those who want to work and the length of time people remain unemployed is getting longer.

However now there is a new trend that makes it harder for those caught in the ranks of the unemployed to find and get a job.

Did you know that many companies won’t even consider hiring the unemployed?

It’s a fact.

If you are currently without work, for any reason, there are companies with job openings that won’t even let you apply.

At first I couldn’t believe it was true since there are many qualified, hard working people who have lost their jobs for reasons not under their control. Reasons like companies going bankrupt or companies relocating jobs to other countries.

Unfortunately it is true. There was an article in Time back in May of this year, a briefing paper in July, and even the Today Show talked about it this month.

Not allowing a person to apply for a job because they are unemployed is unbelievable but true.

Now I could talk about why this hiring philosophy is bad for the unemployed but instead I’ll tell you why I think it’s bad for business. When a business limits its applications to only those currently employed it may be banning the most qualified from applying. In today’s job market, not having a job doesn’t automatically mean someone is a bad worker or doesn’t have the skills. In fact, a person with several years of experience working in an field where new skills had to be acquired regularly and then lost their job due to extraneous factors may be more qualified than most of those applying who currently have jobs. And I’ll even go on to say that most of those who have been unemployed for awhile will work harder at keeping the job since they are more desperate.

Am I wrong?

Leave a comment and let me know what you think about this new form of job discrimination?

To Your Success,
Susan

P.S. Just to let you know, I am not currently unemployed nor have I ever been. However kicking someone when their down, just because they are down, doesn’t seem right to me.

If you would like to do something about this unfair hiring practice there is a petition to “Ban Job Listings that Discriminate Against the Unemployed” from Monster.com you can sign.

P.P.S. After writing this article I found out my youngest daughter – the one who worked the entire time she was working on her PhD – encountered this problem personally. After she had her degree she tried to apply for a job and because she was only a part-time employee the last few years she was not allowed to apply for a job. Even though her part-time work was giving her experience in her field and she had received her degree, because she was not a full-time employee, she was not allowed to submit an application.

So now, after our conversation, I am taking this insane hiring policy personally!

If you receive an unsolicited call from Microsoft Tech Support, hang up!

Yesterday I received an unexpected call from someone telling me they had called because of the error pop-ups I was getting on my computer. I told them I wasn’t getting any pop-ups and they informed me that I was even if I didn’t see them. The caller went on to say that these pop-ups were slowing my machine down because they were infecting it with 1 or more viruses.

Although I was skeptical about this call and was having a hard time understanding the person due to their accent, I was also curious about what the caller wanted so I continued with the call. The caller directed me to go turn on my computer. Telling me to turn my computer on only supported my skepticism since I had been working online all morning.

Once I was at my machine I was given the instructions to bring up the run menu. When they started giving me a website address to type in I interrupted and stated I was having a hard time understanding them. The caller asked me to hold on and I assume went to get someone with less of an accent.

While I waited a few seconds for someone else to come on the call I could hear a lot of yelling in both English and another language in the background.

A second, easier to understand person came on the call and gave me the website to type into my run box. After he gave me the url I informed him I wouldn’t do it since I didn’t know who he was or what he wanted. I also stated that I felt this was a security issue since he had called me and I didn’t really know who he was or why he was calling.

With that, the caller directed me to the comantra website. When I got to the site I clicked the pricing button before I told the caller the site had come up.

Their prices are not cheap!

When I told the caller I was at the site he informed me that because I was a Windows user my error pop-ups had been detected and I was entitled to get my pc cleaned up. I asked who was paying for this service since I had noticed the pricing item on the menu and he said it was already paid for since I was using Windows.

“You mean everyone who is using Windows get this service free?” I asked. He stated, “Yes.”

I was then sent to the remote access page on the site and given a “secret” 6-digit number to both write down for future use and enter into the onscreen box.

I wrote the number down and asked, “Does entering this number give you remote access into my machine?”

He said, “Yes.”

I then stated that I had 6 computers in use and asked if I would have to do this for every one of them or if only 1 was infected. He stated that they were all infected and by giving access to 1 machine would clean them all up.
At that point I declined his offer to clean my machines and told him I would not give him access.

Would you believe he then told me that I could never turn my machine off because if I did I it wouldn’t come back on?

Guess what. My machine did turn on this morning and is running normally. Oh, did I mention I run a virus scan every Friday and it was running during the call?

Oh, 1 last thing. I knew there was something wrong with the call when I answered since my caller ID identified the caller as a blocked number. No reputable business except telemarketing services block their number. Do they?

To Your Success,
Susan

Someone Stole My Dog Poop!

One of many garbage bags at a sports event.

During the last 3 weeks someone has stolen my dog poop… twice!

Actually they took more than my dog poop. They took all my trash waiting outside to be picked up by my trash service.

The first time it happened I was concerned since I know why thieves steal trash. They are looking for enough personal information to steal either your identity or at the very least, some of your money. However my concern was quickly put to rest since I seldom throw personal information into my trash and never ever throw it away unless it’s shredded. And since Christmas was only a few days off before it happened, I knew I hadn’t been cleaning out any old personal files and I save every Christmas present receipt until long after Christmas.

Knowing there was nothing of value in my trash unless you consider empty food containers, dried out cat food and lots and lots of dog poop valuable, I figured the joke was on them.

You see, I clean up after my 3 large dogs daily unless I’m out of town. That means there are always at least 5 and usually 7 grocery bags containing nothing but clumped cat litter and a lot of dog poop. And I don’t just throw those bags into my garbage cans. I put them next to the can until the next large sack of household trash comes out. Then I toss those poop bags into the bigger sack before putting in into the can.

I’ve been following this dog poop routine for several years and here’s why:

1. The yard is a lot nicer when it’s not full of doggie presents.

2. I double bag the poop in an effort to keep it away from the trash collectors.

3. While I can’t see or smell the dog poop inside the big trash bags, it seems to keep the neighborhood cats and raccoons from getting into my trash and making a mess. (I used to use ammonia however dog poop seems to work as well, it’s cheaper and I never run out.)

Now you would think that if someone stole your trash only to discover it was nothing but garbage and dog poop they would leave your trash alone. Well either the thief who took my trash the first time likes those things or a second and even nicer thief came by this week.

You see this week I not only had a couple of big bags outside but I also had a 40 pound dog food sack full of cut up boxes and this week’s thief took it all.

So what did they get this week? Well, they got the same garbage and dog poop in the big bags and since I buy food in bulk they got cut up food boxes and an empty plastic cake container from the bakery.

Will they come back for more? I don’t know but if they decide to keep taking my trash I wish they would let me know. Then I would save all my trash for them and cancel my trash service :-)

To Your Success,
Susan
